Being a Resident

District Hiring:

Securing Your Teaching Position

Candidates accepted into the Baltimore City Teaching Residency will be assigned to teach in a specific subject area. The subject in which Residents are accepted to teach is based primarily on district need, candidates' teaching eligibility and, when possible, candidates' subject area preferences as stated on their applications.

The process of matching Residents with specific teaching positions is coordinated through the BCTR office.  Our program staff works closely with district staff and principal’s to identify schools that need teachers the most.   Residents' teaching positions will be determined through a variety of processes including, but not limited to, job fairs and the coordination of interviews between individual schools and Fellows.  In rare cases, Residents may receive a school assignment by central district staff in the Office of Human Capital.

We ask Residents to remember that securing a teaching position is a challenging process, one that requires both flexibility and active participation on the part of the Resident.  Due to mobility within the school system, it is often difficult to predict exact vacancies until very close to, and in some cases, just after, the beginning of the school year.  Additionally, Residents’ subject areas will dictate what grade levels they are eligible to teach.

It is the mission of BCTR to place Residents in schools with the highest need for teachers. As a result, all candidates should be prepared to teach wherever they are needed most. Again, Residents will have the opportunity to express school position preferences, but district hiring is primarily driven by school needs and by each Resident's qualifications. As a Resident, you must be prepared to be extremely flexible about your teaching assignment.  Accepted Residents are guaranteed a position in the district, provided all requirements are met and the summer training program is successfully completed.
