Being a Resident
Placement in the Baltimore City Public School System

Candidates accepted into the Baltimore City Teaching Residency will be assigned to teach in a specific subject area. The subject in which Residents are accepted to teach is based primarily on teaching eligibility and, when possible, candidates’ subject area preferences as stated on their applications.

(Candidates will have an opportunity to learn more about eligibility and rank subject or content preferences during the interview process.)

Eligibility is determined according to strict Maryland State Department of Education requirements which stipulate that candidates must have either an undergraduate major or a graduate degree in a subject with a minimum G.P.A of 2.75 in that content area in order to teach a given subject. Residents are especially needed to teach in the areas of math, science, and foreign language.

The process of matching Residents with specific teaching positions is coordinated through the Teaching Residency office. Last year, Resident assignments were determined through a variety of processes including, but not limited to, interview and placement fairs and coordination of interviews between individual schools and Residents.

We consistently ask Residents to keep in mind that placement is a challenging process and that due to mobility within the school system; it is often difficult to predict exact teaching assignments until very close to the end of training.

It is the mission of the Baltimore City Teaching Residency to place Residents in schools with the highest need for teachers. As a result, all candidates should be prepared to teach wherever they are needed most. Again, Residents will have the opportunity to express placement preferences, but school placements are primarily driven by school needs and by each Resident’s qualifications. As a Resident, you must be prepared to be extremely flexible about your teaching assignment.

Placement

Winter Program

It is important to note that placement may look different for Residents accepted into the Winter 2009 program.  These Residents may be placed into co-teaching assignments across Baltimore City with a veteran Baltimore City school teacher.  These assignments will be established with the Resident's preference(s) in mind, but final decisions will be made by the Baltimore City Public School System, Department of Human Resources based upon a particular school's needs and accessibility to veteran staff.

Because the winter program was created to address specific gaps in classrooms mid-year, job placement for BCTR 2009 Winter participants is based upon the needs and availability of positions in the Baltimore City Public School System.  In most circumstances, positions will be available.  However, if a secured position is not available, candidates shall have the automatic option to defer to our Summer 2009 Program, and will absolutely be notified no later than November 10, 2008.
