What is BCTR?

Summer Institute

Candidates who enroll in the Baltimore City Teaching Residency must meet eligibility requirements (such as passing required tests) in order to participate in the Summer Institute training. Summer Institute is an intense, rigorous training that typically begins in mid-June and runs through July. There are four main components to Summer Institute, each of which addresses a different aspect of teaching:

  • Framework Sessions. Residents will participate in coursework facilitated by effective City Schools’ teachers called Resident Advisors, who have a demonstrated record of student achievement in their classrooms. Resident Advisors will implement the Teaching for Student Achievement curriculum, which focuses on Instructional Design & Delivery and Classroom Management & Culture, helping turn new teachers into effective teachers.
  • Practice Teaching. Residents will work with Cooperating Teachers in a City Schools’ summer school classroom, receiving increasingly hands-on experience as a classroom teacher. Residents will move from observing their Cooperating Teacher to implementing lessons they’ve designed themselves.
  • Literacy Seminars. Residents will participate in literacy coursework facilitated by effective City Schools’ educators who work as literacy experts, either in or out of the classroom. Literacy Instructors will implement the Big Ideas and Great Teaching in Literacy curriculum, which teaches Residents successful literacy strategies and the importance of literacy instruction across grade levels and content area.
  • Professional Development Workshops. Veteran educators facilitate professional development workshops covering a wide variety of topics, from Time Management to Differentiated Instruction; Residents have the opportunity to register for the workshop topics which interest them most.

Residents who successfully complete every component of their Institute experience will be granted a Resident Teacher Certificate (RTC) by the Maryland State Department of Education.
