About Us
Teaching in the Baltimore City Public School System

The Baltimore City Public School System is the 4th largest school district in Maryland, including 186 schools and more than 87,000 students.

Most Residents are placed in high-need schools throughout the city, where the need for highly qualified teachers is critical. Teachers in these schools are especially committed to overcoming the challenges they face in helping their students achieve.

The school day in Baltimore City is approximately 6.5 hours long. Generally, the day runs from either 7:45 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. or from 8:45 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Residents are provided with additional professional development activities to support their classroom efforts, in addition to the comprehensive summer institute training. Beyond the formal school day, Residents should expect to spend time out of class preparing their lessons, grading students’ work, and communicating with parents and guardians.

The first year for any new teacher is challenging, and Residents should anticipate an intense effort, especially in the first semester.
