About Us
BCTR Winter Program

We are currently accepting applications to our 2009 Winter Program.  To be one of the first to apply, click here.

Since 2002, the Baltimore City Teaching Residency has brought more than 700 new teachers into the Baltimore City Public School System. Like many large urban school districts, however, the Baltimore City Public School System still faces persistent teacher shortages in the middle of each school year.  Often times, schools face unexpected vacancies when teachers retire, take a leave of absence, or even walk off of the job. More often than not, students in these schools are left with a revolving door of substitutes throughout the year. In order to meet the needs of all children in the Baltimore City Public School System, the Baltimore City Teaching Residency has been charged to meet one of our city’s greatest challenges – bringing exceptional teachers into our school system after the start of the school year.

These Residents train with our program during January.  Some may begin to co-teach in classrooms across the city in February with veteran BCPSS teachers while other go into positions immediately.

Placement

It is important to note that placement may look different for Residents accepted into the Winter 2009 program.  These Residents may be placed into co-teaching assignments across Baltimore City with a veteran Baltimore City school teacher or immediately fill vacancies within the school district.  These assignments will be established with the Resident's preference(s) in mind, but final decisions will be made by the Baltimore City Public School System, Department of Human Resources based upon a particular school's needs and accessibility to veteran staff.

Because the winter program was created to address specific gaps in classrooms mid-year, job placement for BCTR 2009 Winter participants is based upon the needs and availability of positions in the Baltimore City Public School System.  In most circumstances, positions will be available for Residents to begin teaching in February, 2009.  However, if a secured position is not available at the mid-year, accepted candidates shall have the automatic option to defer to our Summer 2009 Program.  Candidates will be notified on the status of available positions no later than mid-November 2008.
